The job of the Rescue Service is to prevent accidents and to operatively assist in the protection from damage, that is by giving assistance to prevent and lessen damage to
when accidents occur.
The Rescue Service is the local inspection authority in matters concerning fire protection and also provides expertise in the municipal planning and building decisions as well as in matters concerning chimney sweeping, fire prevention and other matters.
The operative aspects of the rescue service are for example assistance with fire fighting, handling traffic accidents, rescue in water, fighting forest fires and assistance when chemical accidents occur.
The force in Kiruna consists of full time staff, part time staff and volunteers organized in local fire guards.
In all there are always 19 fire fighters ready to assist the public when accidents occur within the town limits.
The Rescue Service also cooperates with the rescue services of our neighboring communities in Norway, Finland and Sweden.
