Kirunas nya polishus byggdes för att ersätta den tidigare byggnaden som påverkades när stadskärnan flyttades.

När Kirunas stadskärna flyttades österut på grund av markdeformationer från gruvbrytningen behövde flera samhällsviktiga funktioner följa med. Den tidigare polishuset var bland de byggnader som påverkades, och LKAB ålades att ersätta det med en ny anläggning i det framväxande centrumet. Här får polisen en långsiktig bas utformad för att fungera säkert under kommande årtionden.
Byggnaden skapades genom ett samarbete mellan LKAB, Kåpan Fastigheter och Polismyndigheten. Av säkerhetsskäl är tillträdet begränsat till de offentliga delarna, och fotografering inne eller utanför byggnaden är inte tillåten.
Från utsidan placerar dess grå fasad och stora skala den tydligt i det offentliga rummet, och dess utformning har väckt lokal diskussion och humor. Vissa Kirunabor har kallat den ”Bunkern”, och byggnaden hamnade till och med på en nationell lista över Sveriges minst omtyckta nybyggen.
Innan flytten fick det gamla polishuset en oväntad avslutande roll. MSB, Kirunas räddningstjänst och LKAB använde den delvis rivna byggnaden för nationella tester av räddningsmetoder. Brandmän från hela Sverige tränade där med ny utrustning, nya verktyg och nya procedurer, och till och med en av LKAB:s robothundar togs in för att stödja de simulerade scenarierna.

Kiruna’s new police station was built to replace the former facility affected by ground deformation as the city centre moved.

As Kiruna’s city centre shifted east because of ground deformation from mining, several essential services had to move with it. The former police station was among the buildings affected, and LKAB was required to replace it with a new facility in the developing centre. Here, the police gain a long-term base designed to function safely in the decades ahead.
The building was created through a collaboration between LKAB, Kåpan Fastigheter and the Swedish Police Authority. For security reasons, access is limited to public areas, and photography inside or outside the building is not permitted.
From the outside, its grey facade and large scale place it firmly in the public eye, and its design has sparked local conversation and humour. Some Kiruna residents have nicknamed it “Bunkern,” and the building even appeared on a national list of Sweden’s ugliest new constructions.
Before the move, the old police station played an unexpected final role. MSB (Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency), Kiruna’s fire and rescue service and LKAB used the partially demolished structure for national rescue-method testing. Firefighters from across Sweden trained there using new equipment, tools and procedures, and even one of LKAB’s robot dogs was brought in to support the simulated scenarios.
