Längst upp efter vägen ser du Kirunas nuvarande badhus. Precis bakom går gränsen för vad som påverkas av stadsomvandlingen. Förenklat går det att säga att allt nedanför badhuset kommer att försvinna inom några år.
Ett nytt badhus byggs just nu i nya stadskärnan och ska stå klart under 2024. Badet ska bli en attraktiv mötesplats som lockar till motion, nöje, rekreation och simsport. Det nya badhuset blir större än dagens och det kommer innehålla en 25-metersbassäng, hoppbassäng, två multibad med höj och sänkbart mellangolv, familjebad, vattenrutschbanor och relaxavdelning.
Nuvarande badhus uppfördes 1957 och innehåller speciella detaljer, material och konstverk typiska för denna tid. Dessa kulturvärden har planerats in i det nya badhuset.
Bland dessa finns konsverket Djungelinteriör som är en 70 kvm stor vågformad väggmosaik av John Wipp och består av 250 000 mosaikbitar. Mosaikbitarna sitter på betong och konstverket har sågats i flera delar och väntar på att sättas upp igen.
Andra kulturvärden är den speciella badskylten som sitter på fasaden samt väggskiffer. Även kulturvärden från gamla stadshuset Igloo kommer att sättas upp i det nya badhuset.
The swimming baths
At the top of the road, you can see Kiruna's current swimming baths. The boundary of the area affected by the transformation of the town is just behind the swimming baths. Basically, it can be said that everything below the swimming baths will disappear within a few years.
New swimming baths are currently being built in the new town centre and are due to be completed in 2024. The baths will be an attractive meeting place that will promote physical exercise, fun, recreation and swimming sports. The new swimming baths will be larger than the current baths. They will include a 25-metre swimming pool, diving pool, two multi-baths with a moveable middle floor, family baths, water slides and a relaxation area.
The current swimming baths were built in 1957 and have special features, materials and works of art that were typical of that time. There are plans for how these cultural heritage items will be incorporated into the new swimming baths.
Among these is the work of art called “Jungle Interior” which is a 70 square meter, wave-shaped wall mosaic by John Wipp, consisting of 250,000 pieces of mosaic. The mosaic pieces are attached to concrete and the artwork are sawn into several parts and will soon be set up in its new location.
Other items of cultural heritage value are the special swimming baths sign on the façade and the wall slate. Cultural heritage items from the old Igloo Town Hall will also be put up in the new swimming baths.
