The relocating of heritage buildings

On 24 May 2017, the first of Kiruna’s cultural heritage buildings was moved. The workers' housing known as B5, shown above, was moved to LKAB's new area at Luossavaara. After that, more cultural heritage buildings were moved to the same area, including Ingenjörsvillan and Hjalmar Lundbohmsgården.

Länsmansbostaden (Bailiff’s Residence) from 1905, in the picture above, was the first cultural building to be moved to the new city center.

This location is where the "Yellow Row" used to be, housing that was constructed as early as in 1900. Kiruna was in great need of housing and in order to build up the town quickly, some buildings were transported here from far away. There were originally six buildings of this type and it is said that at least two of them were built in Luleå and then dismantled and transported here.

Today, three of these buildings remain and in 2019 they were moved to the new town centre. In the illustration below, you can see the Yellow Row on the left and Länsmansbostaden on the right. There is a glimpse of the church in the background. Four more cultural heritage buildings were moved in 2019.

In 2022, five more buildings were moved from an area with buildings built by the state railway company. The red houses was built for the railroadworkers around 1910, and the area was in its time the largest area of this kind in Sweden.

41 buildings will be moved

All in all, 41 buildings will be moved due to the transformation of the town. So far, 14 buildings have been given new addresses. The buildings will be moved in different stages, the next removal being in 2024. The buildings have been chosen on the basis of their cultural and historical value and great care has been taken to choose new locations that are similar to their original locations.
