Gamla brandstationen

The old fire station

In the area between the town plan and LKAB's housing areas, public buildings such as the infirmary, fire station, vicarage, swimming baths, post office and church were built. These were designed by LKAB's corporate architect Gustav Wickman (1958-1916). The red building with the tall tower is the old fire station which was built in 1909.

The elegant fire tower had two functions: firstly, used hoses were hung up there to dry and secondly, almost all of the town could be seen from the top of the tower which enabled efficient control. The old fire station is one of only a few remaining wooden fire stations in Sweden.

The old fire station served as a fire station until 1994 when a new one was built closer to the mine. Due to the transformation of the town, this is now demolished and in 2020, a new station was completed.

The white building on the left is the old infirmary which was built in 1900, but its current appearance and size were added in the 1920s. The yellow corner building on the right is the old vicarage from 1913, which was also designed by Wickman. The buildings will be moved to the new town centre around 2025.

Wickman worked a lot with paint and three colour schemes which are a hallmark of his buildings in Kiruna. The schemes were red façade and green roof, as seen on the old fire station, green façade and red roof, and yellow façade with black roof. His most well-known type of building is the workers’ housing Bläckhornen which can be seen above.
