Gruvstadsparken

Mine City Park

No one is to live with the mine as their nearest neighbour. Instead, a park is being created in the deformation area, the Mine City Park, which will be gradually moved for as long as mining operations are ongoing. This means that areas where houses are moved or demolished can still be visited for a certain period of time. In that way, the areas will be gradually transformed from their current use into parkland and then eventually turned into an industrial area.

The Mine City Park is manifested in different ways depending on what was there before and for how long the area can be a park. You have just visited the newest part of the park, the site of the old Town Hall.

This first part of the park where you are now standing used to be an administrative centre for the mining company with buildings spread out in a spacious park environment. Today there are works of art and an outdoor gym here. In summer, sheep graze here and a little further south, there is a large recreation activity area.

When it is no longer safe to be in the area, it will be fenced off. At the moment, an industrial fence that was erected in 2020 runs through the park. In 2025, the fence will be moved again, this time up to Hjalmar Lundbohmsvägen where you are standing right now.

The Mine City Park project

The Mine City Park is a collaboration between Kiruna Municipality and LKAB that has been in place since 2011. The picture above is from the inauguration by the work of art which you will walk past in the park. Plans for the manifestation of future parts of the park are currently underway.
