Du står nu på platsen för Kirunas gamla stadshus som revs 2019 på grund av stadsomvandlingen. Platsen är idag gestaltad med hjälp av delar av stadshuset. Även andra detaljer och material bevarades innan rivningen och planeras in i nya byggnader.
Gamla stadshuset var prisbelönt, både med Kasper Salinpriset för bästa nybyggnad och byggnadsminnesmärkt. Byggnaden ritades av arkitekten Arthur von Schmalensee.
Byggnadens namn Igloo kommer av att byggnaden var sluten på utsidan men öppnade upp sig på insidan. Den stora stadshushallen kallades för Kirunabornas vardagsrum och användes till stora arrangemang.
Precis som gamla stadshuset var ett resultat av en arkitekttävling utlystes en arkitekttävling för nytt stadshus, där Henning Larsen Architects vann.
2018 stod Kirunas nya stadshus, som fick namnet Kristallen, klar som första byggnad i nya stadskärnan. Byggnaden innehåller även Norrbottens länskonstmuseum; Konstmuseet i norr.
Konsten har alltid varit viktig i Kiruna och kommunen har idag en stor konstsamling samt ett konststipendium, Kirunastipendiet. Redan 1904 hölls en första konstutställning i samhället som anordnades av LKAB:s disponent. I Gamla stadshuset visades en Picassoutställning 1965.
Gamla stadshuset hade många speciella detaljer och konstverk av hög kvalitet. Klockstapeln är designad av Konrad Hernelind och är skapad av stadens eget järn och utsmyckad av konstnären Bror Marklund. 2017 monterades klocktornet ned i sex delar och sattes upp bredvid nya stadshuset Kristallen.
The old Town Hall
You are now standing on the site of Kiruna's old Town Hall which was pulled down in 2019 because of the transformation of the town. Today, the location is marked out with the help of some components from the old Town Hall. Before the building was demolished, other features and materials were also preserved and they will be used in new buildings.
The old Town Hall had won the Kasper Salin Award for Best New Building. It was also a listed heritage building. The building was designed by architect Arthur von Schmalensee.
The name of the Igloo building comes from the fact that the building was closed on the outside but opened up on the inside. The vast hall inside the Town Hall was called the Kiruna residents' living room and was used for large events.
Kiruna’s old Town Hall was the result of an architectural competition. In the same way, an architectural competition was organised for the new Town Hall, which was won by Henning Larsen Architects.
In 2018, Kiruna's new Town Hall, named Kristallen, was completed, the first building in the new town centre. The building also hosts the county of Norrbotten’s art museum, Konstmuseet i norr.
Art has always been important in Kiruna. Today, the municipality has a large art collection as well as an art scholarship, Kirunastipendiet. As early as in 1904, the first art exhibition in Kiruna was organised by LKAB's managing director. A Picasso exhibition was shown in the old Town Hall in 1965.
The old Town Hall had many special features and works of art of high quality. The bell tower was designed by Konrad Hernelind and was made out of the town's own iron and embellished by the artist Bror Marklund. In 2017, the bell tower was dismantled into six parts and then erected next to the new Kristallen Town Hall.
